Random Fact of the Day - 8.1.11

August is named after Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire. Typically, the hottest days of the year occur in August.  The flowers for the month of August are the poppy and the gladiolus.


On August 1st:
  • In America, the first cable streetcar  began running on Clay Street Hill in San Francisco, CA.
  • The 38th state, Colorado, entered the United States on August 1st. It  entered the union 100 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Therefore, Colorado is called the "Centennial State".  
  • MTV (Music Television) debuted at 12:01 a.m.
